Weekly Wrap-Up: Going Buggy

School is going well and winding down for the year.  Spelling is finished, grammar, and writing will be done next week. Math the week after.   A few more weeks for history, read alouds, and science.  Ahhh…
We’ve finished WW2 and have moved on to the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cold War.  Mackenzie is currently reading Bruchko, an awesome story about a missionary in South America,  and our read aloud is The Miracle on Maple Hill.
Our biggest excitement is science.  Our painted ladies emerged from their chrysalis’.

We released them but one was not “well” so we put him in some flowers.  Sadly, he came to an untimely end thanks to some birds.  Mackenzie now curses all birds except the ones on her dinner plate.  LOL
Our lady bugs made it to the adult stage too!  They now live in our garden protecting our veggies from aphids.

Nothing to report with our praying mantis egg case but there have been changes with the monarch caterpillars.  The bad news is that four of them died.  =o(  But one made his chrysalis.  It such a lovely shade of green.  Much prettier then the painted lady ones.

We ended our week with a bike ride on the board walk.  Guess what we saw there?

Oh very cool! We have yet to observe a butterfly in person come out of its chrysalis. We caught a few in the fall, but they both died. We get all kinds of ladybugs here-and my kids catch them for 'pets.' They dont live long, but the free entertainment is worth something lol. Have fun wrapping everything up!

You guys are getting close too! Next week is our last regular week of school. We have a number of field trips that'll make up for the last 4 days after next week. It's been a while since we've done the butterflies. (We have the ladybug and ant kits too, waiting.) Fun stuff!

Sounds like a fun week. My daughter loves to find lady bugs on our plants but then yells at them for eating all the leaves...lol!
