In her last official act of fourth grade, Mackenzie took her CAT test. I think it went well.
She was introduced to some new skills, like adding fractions. Math-U-See has a totally different scope & sequence then public schools and other curriculums, so she won't be learning about fractions until next year. Then she'll learn about them in depth.
The differences in scope & sequence haven't stopped Mackenzie yet. Math-U-See has given such a great understanding of the whys, as well as the hows, of math that she's always managed to figure out how to do what she hasn't been taught yet. I just love it.
Before the test we had a fun trip to the Virginia Living Museum. Their current traveling museum was about butterflies. Very timely since our last science unit was on butterflies.
Working together to move like a caterpillar
Bird Food Ack!
Climbing Leaves
I don't remember what this was. LOL
She's a pupa
Captured!

I'm flying!!
Observing the real thing
I wonder what we'll find to do next week. Definitely a trip to the water park.
School’s out, school’s out teacher let the students out!
We’re done. Finished. Fini. Finito. Oh happy day!!! Except for the part that makes my baby a fifth grader instead of a fourth grader. Wahhh!!!
Mackenzie still has to take her CAT test but I’m not worried about that. We may or may not take it next week.
We broke up our last week with a trip to Water Country. Good times! Shout out to Wendy for bringing a camera so we’d have some pictures.
On my agenda for the summer is to file my notice of intent for next year, finish entering next year’s lessons into Homeschool Tracker and get stuff organized. I’m almost done with HST.
It’s taken a little bit longer FORVER this year because the curriculum I’m using, during our year off from Sonight, isn’t organized very well. I’m finding tons and tons of errors in the IG and I’m having to dig through the books to figure out what we’re supposed to be doing.
I thought about sending the whole lot back and just doing Core 5 over two years, but seeing how I’m still missing two books from my March order I didn’t think the odds of getting a refund were very good.
Oh well, I’m still excited about the Christmas unit.
We are one week out from ending our school year. It's always bitter sweet. We're always excited to have a nice break and we look forward to starting our new year. However, I'm always a bit bummed to see my babies leaving one grade for another. Wah!!!
We had a nice little day trip this week. My niece in the state for some softball tournament that her boyfriend was coaching. So we hopped in the car and drove four hours so we could spend some time with her. And we got to visit the Natural Bridge. Beautiful.
So here are the highlights of our trip. Our let the pictures do most of the talking.
Some beautiful Blue Mountain scenery along the drive.
There was a little butterfly habitat near the bridge. Great timing for our science study. (Bad lighting though. LOL)
There was also a Toy Museum that I found highly insulting. It was filled with toys that I played with as a child. Apparently I'm that old. LOL It was also filled with creepy dolls that looked like they wanted to hurt you. Shudder...
My weekly wrap-ups are becoming by-weekly. LOL Ooops!!!
We're in the homestretch of our school year. I'm happy to be done but sad at the thought of my first baby going into 5th grade. Wahhhh!!!
I guess I'll give you the subject-by-subject run down this time. LOL
Bible:
We're still reading it. =o) We're reading a bit in Ecclesiastes now. I have no idea if I spelled that right. Mackenzie's also doing a 6 week Bible study through our church. So far, she's already known every verse that they've asked her to memorize. LOL
She just finished her first lesson on fractions. Good thing because they're on her CAT test. LOL Math-U-See has a different scope and sequence then most math programs so they're usually something she hasn't learned yet on the test. But she's never scored less than the 98th percentile so I'm not too worried. Math-U-See Delta focuses mainly on division with a little of this and that mixed in. Her new lesson is on Roman numerals.
Social Studies:
She finished her Star Spangled State Book geography study. She took her final exam today and got 100%.
In history we've been covering the Civil Rights movement and the Kennady and Johnson presidencies.
Science is going to take the longest for us to finish since we had to hold off our insect study due to the crazy weather this year. We only have 3 lessons left but we usually take two weeks per lesson. But I guess I don't have to do them over two weeks, do I? LOL
This lesson was on social insects: ants, wasps, termites. Now that Mackenzie knows how honey is made she no longer wants to eat it. LOL
Here she is working on her mini-books for her notebook.
Extras:
She had her very first piano recital this week. I'll let her playing speak for itself. She's very sad that piano is finished for the summer. In the fall she'll start private lessons.
