Review ~ Apologia: Who Is My Neighbor?

As you know, we have often used Apologia products in our homeschool. Their products are always huge hits in our house. We were recently given the opportunity to review another book in their What Do I Believe? series. Given that we loved the Who Am I? set, we were so excited to hear that we'd be receiving Who Is My Neighbor? As always, Apologia did not disappoint.

About Who Is My Neighbor?

The third book in the award-winning What We Believe series helps children understand what it means to be salt and light to the world (Matthew 5:13-14). This study will encourage kids to develop a Christlike servant attitude based on these biblical truths: God created me to be a blessing to the world; God chooses to work through me; I can make a difference at home, in my community, and at church; the church is God's family; the church is one body with many gifts; and I am an important member of Jesus' body.

The set comes includes the text, notebooking journal, and coloring book. In true Apologia style, the text is written in a conversational tone that is easy and interesting to read. The notebooking journal is filled with a variety of activities including: note-taking pages, thought provoking discussion questions, vocabulary, memory work, word puzzles, mini-books, prayer pages, praise reports, and lots more. It will make a wonderful keepsake of the study.

Our Experience

Like our last experience with the What We Believe series, this one touched us right from the start. I don't think we made through the first few pages before we heard God speaking to us through this book.   The following paragraphs really sum up the what the book hopes to accomplish and they really hit home for my tween daughter.

Now as you know, God created Adam and Eve a very long time ago. But the work He gave them to do and the responsibility He gave them to serve and love one another still apply to us today. Just as Adam need Eve to be his companion and helper, you and I also need others as companions to love us and help us do all God commands us to  do here on the earth.


But in order to serve, you and I must be more concerned about others than ourselves. This is not always easy. After all, most of us like being served instead of serving. Yet Jesus said, "The greatest among you must be a servant" (Matthew 23:11, NLT). Indeed, God Himself showed us how to serve one another. He did this by sending Jesus to serve us. God's Son was the perfect servant--He cared more about us than even His own life. Once you understand Jesus' willing heart for serving others and you choose to follow his example, you can become the amazing person God created you to be!

When we read that, Mackenzie just burst into tears. "God wrote this for me! He wrote it for me!"

Eleven is such a difficult age. You're entering the world of hormones and have no clue how to control them. It's so incredibly easy to be so focused on ones on feelings that you don't notice how that affects others. It's a difficult time for the child going through it and for those who love them most. The timing of this review was most certainly God's.

It's given us God's prospective on how we should relate to those around us. Particularly, little sisters who can often push buttons. It's given us ideas on how to best represent God out in the world. It's helping us to notice how others are serving those around them and encouraging us to do the same. Quite frankly, it's filled with wonderful lessons and reminders for both of us.

I really think that this book would be a fabulous choice as a study for the whole family. The lessons within these pages are meant for every one, not just emotional tweens and their frazzled mommies.
