Weekly Wrap-up

Well another week had gone by and it's time for another wrap-up hosted by Kris.

We had a pretty good week. We have been having some issues with attitudes and following directions lately and they "episodes" seemed to have scaled down this week.

Next week we're going to work on "do your school work while Kayleigh is in baby gym." Mackenzie loves going to the Little Gym, even though she doesn't take a class. She loves playing with all the babies and she loves to chat to the owner. She'd like to consider it her social hour but I really need her to get her seat work done while wee babe and I are in class. We can't afford to give away an hour like that or we'll be doing school work all day. Here's hoping that next week she works first and socializes second. Or else...

Here's what we covered this week...

Bible:

We studied Herod and the Wisemen this week. Whenever we talk about King Herod Mackenzie loves to hear the story about how, as a young tot, she used to refer to him as "Bad King Harry." LOL There's nothing more Mackenzie loves to talk about then herself.

Language Arts:

We reviewed adjectives and adverbs. Mackenzie had to think while diagramming this week to make sure she didn't mix up her placement, as they had her working with sentences that contained both. LOL

She's almost got The Tragic Story memorized. She thinks the fellow in the poem is hysterical.

Math:

Our topic for the week was Solving for the Unknown. She's done this in the past, with addition and subtraction, so it didn't take her too long to grasp it using multiplication. Of course, as always, she sees the topic and starts her tirade about how this is going to be "too hard." Then we watch Mr. Demme and she's back with her "Oh this is easy!" remarks. Typical. LOL

Science:

We studied the brain this week. We did a little experiment to test how fast we react to things. Bascially you drop a strip of paper into the other person's hand to see how quickly they grab it. The quicker your reaction the closer you'll be too the bottom. She got a little flustered at first because she didn't react as quickly as mommy. But then I've had 30 more years worth of stuff to react too. LOL

Social Studies:

Our Native American focus was on the Delaware tribes. We also learned that we like William Penn for not accepting Indian land that wasn't the governments to give away. Mackenzie was so thrilled when he refused to take the land and, instead, purchased it from the tribe. Yay William!!

We are starting to cover the colonization of the U.S. This week we talked about the pilgrims voyage and began making our Life in Plymouth Colony history pocket. Mackenzie thinks it's wonderful that she has two history pockets this year.

Here's Mackenzie's map of the Pilgrim's voyage for her history pocket.

We are still reading The Sign of the Beaver as our read aloud and Mackenzie started reading about Squanto this week. We have yet to start our Colombus report. =o( LOL

We finished off our week with another trip to Busch Gardens.

  1. How is "Sign of the Beaver", we have that book on our reading list for this Fall.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who has trouble keeping their kids on task while at an extra-curricular activity for a sibling. I am working hard on that this year with my 8 and 7 year old. One friend suggested having something they listen to on head phones during that time - such as History or a Book. I might give that a try.

    Have a great week!

  4. I've been trying to find ways to convince mine to get work done while we're waiting on things and it hasn't been going too well...there's just too many things to look at and people to talk to!

  6. I love reading your weekly wrap-ups. I've been thinking about doing one of my own and then get too lazy. LOL We're really enjoying Sign of the Beaver! FINALLY a good book that is also a good read aloud! The other read alouds this year have been good, but I haven't thought that they were the best books to actually have to read out loud. Lauren likes "The Tragic Story" as well.

  7. It's great that you're covering grammar so thoroughly! I've let that slide in the past...and this year too (so far). I REALLY need to get on that!
